• Shingled Magnetic Recording HDD’s June 19, 2015

    The latest generation of hard disk drives released by the main manufacturers has seen capacities increase to 8TB and 10TB, aimed at the archive and enterprise server market. To achieve this advance the drives utilise a new technique called shingle magnetic recording, whereby the tracks are overlapped. This capacity increase comes at a cost, causing data transfer rates to be lower than the previous generation making them unsuitable for general use.

    We have recently seen an in-flux of 1TB Seagate hard disk drives, including the ST31000520AS model, which have suffered damage to the maintenance area of the drive. The result is that when a read error occurs, it indicates to the firmware that a critical fault has been found, which causes the drive to power down and go off-line.
