Seagate 1TB Disk Maintenance Error

We have recently seen an in-flux of 1TB Seagate hard disk drives, including the ST31000520AS model, which have suffered damage to the maintenance area of the drive. The result is that when a read error occurs, it indicates to the firmware that a critical fault has been found, which causes the drive to power down and go off-line.

Our hardware data recovery engineers are able to overcome this problem, which allows them to take a sector-by-sector image copy of the drive. When this problem occurs it is common for there to be some unreadable bad sectors, but these do not normally many problems with recovering the data from the file system.
