Colchester is a historic town in the English county of Essex, located on the River Colne. Colchester (Population 2011: 121,859) is believed to derive its name from two Latin words, Colonia and Castra, a fortified Roman settlement where the citizens had equivalent rights to Roman citizens. The earliest evidence of settlement in the area is demonstrated by a find of Palaeolithic flint tools. Additional flint tools used by hunter gatherers during the Mesolithic period have also been discovered in the area. Pottery dating from Neolithic times, Bronze Age and the early Iron Age have also been found. Many Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments have been found in the surrounding area in the form of a henge and many barrows used for burials. Colchester was mentioned by the Roman historian Pliny the Elder in AD 43 and therefore believed to be the oldest recorded town in Britain. A long association with the military started when the Romans established a legionary fortress called Camulodunum. Colchester is of great historical significance as its town walls are believed to be the oldest in Britain as well as housing many important Roman archealogical finds, such a couple of theatres.

Following the Roman occupation, the town declined, being largely abandoned by the end of the 6th century, before a revival some time over the next two centuries. Colchester came under Danelaw around 880, remaining in Danish hands until 917, when Edward the Elder laid siege to the town before recapturing it. During the 10th century the Saxon name for the town was Colneceastre. Colchester Castle, the main landmark of the town was built in the 11th century. In the late 14th century the Colchester became a centre for the woollen cloth industry, becoming famous in many European countries, during which time it developed rapidly. During the latter half of the 16th century many weavers and clothmakers from Flanders emigrated to the area, with a part of the town still called the Dutch Quarter. This helped establish Colchester as one of the most prosperous wool towns in England. Much of the architecture in the town dates from the Victorian era. During the 20th century Colchester has become known for building diesel engines.
Colchester remains a garrison town, despite the MOD selling off parts of the land. The majority of industry in the Colchester area is done by small and medium businesses. This means the majority of data recovery requirements from the area are from laptop, desktop and external hard disk drive, with only a small demand from enterprise level storage systems, such as SAN and NAS RAID arrays.
