Stafford is the county of Staffordshire located in the West Midlands area of England. Stafford means ‘ford’ by a ‘staithe’ and old name for a landing place. The original settlement was built on a dry sand and gravel peninsula providing a strategic crossing point in the marshy valley of the River Sow, a tributary of the River Trent. Stafford is thought to have been founded in about 700 AD by a Mercian prince called Bertelin who, according to legend, established a hermitage on the peninsula named Betheney or Bethnei.
Stafford had a long history of shoe making dating back to at least 1476 as a cottage industry, with manufacturing processes introduced in the 1700s, but has since died out. Since the early 1900’s several heavy electrical engineering companies have based themselves in Stafford, in particular specialising in large transformers. Stafford is also home to the computer science and IT campus of Staffordshire University.
