Brighton is a seaside resort on the south coast of England in the country of East Sussex. Brighton (Population 2014: 281,076) forms the larger part of the city of Brighton and Hove, famous for Royal Pavillion, Grand Hotel and the piers. The earliest archealogical finds have dated habitatants in the area back to the Bronze Age as well as during Roman and Anglo-Saxon times. At the time of the Domesday Book the town was known as Brighthelmstone. Although the town grew in importance during the Middle Ages, it was later to suffer a decline, as an effect of foreign attacks, dwindling economy and population and many storms. The improved road system to London saw Brighton become a popular port for boats travelling to France. Sea bathing was also seen as a cure for many illnesses, allowing Brighton to become a health resort.

During the Georgian era the Prince Regent, later to become George IV, spent a lot of time in the town building the Royal Pavillion, which helped to increase Brighton’s popularity as a fashionable seaside resort. The arrival of the railway in 1841 lead to even further expansion of the town during the Victorian era, during which time the Grand Hotel and the piers were built. The town continued to expand during the 20th century, joining with Hove to form a unitary authority in 1997, before gaining city status in 2000. Brighton is the most popular seaside destination for overseas tourists in the UK.

Contrary to popular belief, few inhabitants of Brighton commute to London, nor is it mostly populated by rich and retired businesspeople. Although tourism does form an important part of the economy, Brighton is an important retail centre in the area and home to many companies involved in the creative arts, new and digital media and IT sectors. Brighton has had little involvement in major industry, the most significant being the railway works, which built steam locomotives. The financial and insurance sectors form a major part of employment in the area. With a large residential population the main requirements for data recovery are from desktop, laptop and external USB hard disk drives, with a much smaller demand for enterprise level data storage solutions such as SAN and NAS RAID arrays.
