Canterbury is a cathedral city in Kent, located on the River Stour. Canterbury (Population 2011: 55,240) is home to the Archbishop of Canterbury, the principal leader of the Church of England and symbolic head of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The cathedral has been the focus of pilgrimages after the martyrdom of Thomas Becket in 1170, the subject of Geoffery Chaucer’s 14th century classic, The Canterbury Tales. Canterbury has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the main settlement of the Cantiaci, a Celtic tribe. In the 1st century the Romans captured the settlement, naming it Doruvernum Cantiacorum, rebuilding the city in a grid pattern, in a theatre, temple, forum and public baths. To protect against the barbarians, the Romans built earth banks in the 3rd century. Following the departure of the Romans the area was abandoned, with the exception of a few farmers. In 597, Augustine was sent by Pope Gregory the Great to convert the country to Christianity, with Canterbury chosen as the site for an abbey and the cathedral.

In 842 and 851 the Danes raided Canterbury, causing a great loss of life, with further attacks in 991 and 1011, the latter raid seeing the cathedral burnt. Following the Norman Invasion, William the Conqueror built a motte-and-bailey castle, which was rebuilt of stone the following century. When the Black Death struck Canterbury in 1348, it reduced the population for about 10,000 inhabitants, down to 3,000 over the next 150 years. Canterbury is also famous for being the location of the Peasants’ Revolt in 1381, lead by Wat Tyler, a protest against the poll tax. Tourism forms a significant part of the local economy, along with several retail centres, a business park and an enterprise hub, aimed at businesses using and creating modern technology.
