The city of Carlisle, nicknamed the Great Border City, is the county town of Cumbria, located where the rivers Eden, Calshaw and Petteril meet, in an area historically known as Cumberland. Carlisle (Population 2011: 75,306) lies 56 miles west of Newcastle, 71 miles north of Lancaster, 91 miles southeast of Glasgow and 93 miles south of Edinburgh. The earliest history comes from the Roman historian Tacitus, who notes that area was previously inhabited by the Carveti tribe. The Roman settlement of Luguvalium was important for serving the forts along Hadrian’s Wall.
Carlisle Data Recovery UK
Due to its proximity to the Kingdom of Scotland, just 10 miles south of the border, Carlisle was until the Industrial Revolution an important military stronghold, although the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 was part of Scotland. Carlisle Castle was built in 1092 by William Rufus, later being used as a prison to hold Mary Queen of Scots. Henry the First allowed a priory to be built in the early 12th century, becoming a cathedral. The economy of Carlisle only took off during the Industrial Revolution, when it became a mill town, during which a canal and the railway were built. The railway station, at the north end of the Settle to Carlisle line, was of great importance, being used by 7 separate companies and sitting on the line to Glasgow.
During the Industrial Revolution Carlisle became best known for its textile mills, engineering works and food manufacturing. During the 20th century these industries declined, with light industrial and business parks a major economic factor. It is also home to the University of Cumbria, museums and heritage centres. Data recovery requirements in the city are largely focussed on desktop, laptop and external hard disks, with only a small sector making use of SAN and NAS enterprise level RAID data storage solutions.
