Stockport is a large town located in the Greater Manchester area, approximately 7 miles southeast of Manchester city centre. Stockport (Population 2011: 136,081) sits at the confluence of the River Goyt and Tame where it becomes the River Mersey. Stockport does not appear in the Domesday Book, first showing up in 1170 as “Stokeport” thought to translate from Old English as a market place at a hamlet.
