SSD (solid state drive) technology based on NAND flash memory chips are used in many high end laptops, desktops and servers for primary OS (operating system) data storage. This is ideal as it provides fast computer boot times and rapid loading of application program files.
SSD drives provide fast data access, because the memory chips in the SSD drives are configured in parallel. Also because there are no mechanical moving parts, unlike the traditional hard disk drive, which use spinning magnetic platters and magnetic read/write heads to access data. In addition due to there being no moving parts, SSD drives also suffer lower failure rates.
However SSD drives can still fail. Typically these can be as a result of the SSD controller failure, NAND flash memory chip architecture malfunction or simply electronic damage to the PCB (printed circuit board) due to a power surge and failure of the computer PSU (power supply unit.)
Over the years DiskEng have recovered data from large numbers of USB flash memory devices, including pen-drives, thumb-drives and memory sticks. Extending from this capability, we have developed both hardware and software recovery solutions to access data directly from the SSD NAND flash memory chips, to recover raw data.
Through R&D research, we have been able to successfully process the memory chip data striping and data interleaving using our own software and recover user data files. Of the many different SSD drives recovered, almost all use the same complex architecture to store data. Despite these complexities we have been successful with over 74% of SSD drives sent to DiskEng for SSD drive data recovery.
Below are some of the SSD drive manufacturers we have recovered data from:
